For someone staying in the Bay Area for more than a week its easy to realize how important it is to get a car license given the distances that you might have to travel to go to the nearest outlet of nationwide chains like Walmart, Subway, Starbucks or even some local store. And so without elaborating the need for a license much here's the step-by-step how-to for getting a license in the Bay Area or for that matter anywhere in California -
1) The need and the will to get a driver's license.
2) A non-lazy butt to be taken to the nearest or the most accessible California DMV office. You should carry your ID(like a passport etc) with you and a pen if you don't want to rely on others.
3) Stand in the line early in the morning half an hour before the office opens(online appointment generally won't give you the desired date and time). The DMV staff will scan through the line asking people as to why they are there to bother the DMV. Tell them you want a license and they will hand you a form after you show your ID. Fill up the form.
4) When the office opens go to the counter as directed by the DMV person you talked to. Give your form, show your ID, pay the fees and take the written test.
5) Get the test checked and assuming you pass go to the photography session. Get yourself clicked. Take the temporary license document home.
6) Get some driving lessons.
8) Before your temporary license expires take an online appointment for driving test(this is a lengthy exam and so online appointment preferred).
7) On the decided day and time take your butt to the DMV again. This time you need to have a car along with the licensed owner/instructor/person who has full insurance for the car. This is so that if you screw up when driving you can get money to mend the damage you might do to the car.
8) Go to the counter for the driving test appointment. The person there would usually be screaming for the people with the appointment at that time. Give your details. You might need to show the car insurance here. Take your car to the place they tell you to go.
9) Wait for the examiner and be prepared to show the car's lights, brakes, left/right signals. Show the car's documents to the instructor if asked.
10) Imagine smoking/having a drink/having s** or anything that relieves stress. Let the examiner get in and drive as instructed.
11) Don't make stupid mistakes. You might want to have a light chat with the examiner just to control your nerves.
12) Once you are done let the examiner tell you those 3 magical words - "You have passed". Again imagine smoking/having a drink/having s** as a reward and head back with the person you came.
Voila! You have the license!!
